AUT's School of Art + Design is at an exciting stage.

Our research is conducted through the process of design and the school hosts a number of reasearch clusters including the Emergent Ecologies Lab, that engages with urban architecture and Maori ecologies, the DHW lab, a live design environment for staff and students within Auckland City Hospital, and the Virtual Production lab, a hub for digital technologies such as motion capture.

Thomas Mical

Head of School

The school has a lively engagement with the Auckland Art Gallery including co-hosting events such as the 'Engaging Publics' symposium and the annual Curatorial symposium. At the heart of the school is the internationally recognised St Paul St Gallery, which hosts a stream of international artists who often develop work together with students.

The School is a leader in the field of creative practice research and staff mentor postgraduate students into large-scale projects that shift beyond the studio into communities and a diverse range of creative industries. In addition, Art + Design staff produce and edit a number of journals such as Interstices (Spatial Design); Journal for Design, Business and Society; and Studies in Material Thinking. This research site profiles a number of new projects produced by leading edge researches at AUT's School of Art + Design
